Each tile is a unique piece of stoneware handcrafted from ceramic molds—a time-honored yet labor-intensive process. The journey begins with a hand-carved design—Drumboden tiles are all original designs by Lecy Campbell. A plaster mold is poured around the original tile, which is lost in the making of the mold. Clay is then hammered into the mold and pops out as a tile—a replica of the original. Each tile is painstakingly dried for several weeks, which involves careful attention, rotation, and coddling to ensure that no cracks form and the tiles do not warp.
The tiles are first bisque fired at a low temperature. The clay undergoes a transformation in this firing but remains porous for the glaze. Ceramic glazes are then hand painted onto each tile. The final step is to glaze fire the painted tile in a kiln. This fuses the glaze to the stoneware, creating a lasting piece of ceramic art.
Because of the handcrafted nature of the work, each tile is unique. Variations in glazes give each tile its own special characteristics. All tiles are made in the USA to be non-toxic and lead free. Drumboden Tiles is a member of the Handmade Tile Association.
Lecy Campbell, the artist behind Drumboden Tiles, graduated from University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1991. She has always loved ceramics, color and 3D design. Lecy wants to bring her love of color and texture to unique kitchen tiles for backsplash, bathroom tile designs and fireplace surround ideas.
